In recent years horticulture has emerged as an important new industry in Central Australia with the potential to provide significant economic and employment opportunities for Aboriginal landowners. <p>
The current industry focus is on production of early maturing table grapes however research by NT Departments responsible for primary industries (DPIFM) has identified citrus, mangoes, tomatoes, asparagus, dates and other commercial crops suitable also.<P>

Northern Indigenous Pastoral Alliance (NIPA)

At the Yawuru trading floor in May 2004, an exciting new partnership was announced between the Kimberley Aboriginal Pastoralists Assn (KAPA) and the Northern Cattle Alliance (NCA) from Cape York. The Northern Indigenous Pastoral Alliance (NIPA), as the partnership is known, will, among other things, develop a franchise business model for IPEs.
NIPA believes that the franchise model can deliver the possibility of sustainable IPEs by providing all key stakeholders with the incentives, skills and mentoring necessary to direct and manage indigenous cattle enterprises.

<b>Proposal</b>: A proposal by Kimberly Aboriginal Pastoral Association (KAPA) to establish a cattle franchising agency has been developed. There is a concept for the franchising agency to be run under the auspices of a National Indigenous Pastoralists Alliance (NIPA) with an initial focus on the Kimberley and Cape York Peninsula. Start up capital, franchise expertise and cattle industry partners are sought and an initial discussion to talk about the idea will be held at the Yawuru Trading Floor of ISX May 19.<p>
