Here is Gaypalani launching our September/October 2026 campaign.

He is signalling a new era.. the need to create a new car Djotarra 2.

Djotarra was a very significant Gumatj ancestral hero. She was a woman known also as Bayini. Djotarra 1 was a very special car for the family. It was first owned by Don Burarrwanga and then Batumbil Burarrwanga in the early 2000s. All of the cars at Mata Mata are given names.

ISX campaigns have resulted in several cars for the community over the years. A new addition to this campaign is the fact that we will create an account for fuel at Nhulunbuy BP as well as money for regular servicing.

Djotarra 2 will also be aimed at supporting a new family business gathering nanka bakarra (kakadu plum) and processing it on the homeland for sale to health food shops in the south east and other places. The income from the Nankarra bakara project will not make cars sustainable but it will help.

The blue shed in which Djotarra 1 has languished now for many years will be the hub for the new business as well as arts and crafts production.

Project description:
Mata Mata is the oldest Yolŋu homeland in North East Arnhem Land. A car here lasts about two years. The road, the salt and the wet finish it. When the vehicle dies, the clinic run, the ceremony trip and the freight stop with it. We have looked at reviving an old Land Cruiser already here, and the old family car, Djotarra. Neither is workable. Getting either of them into town is about three or four thousand dollars, and then they need new gearboxes and other major parts. By the time that is done, twenty thousand dollars has gone on an older car that will almost certainly have something else wrong with it. The cheaper and better option is to buy a car from the southeast, even one with flaws. The vehicles of choice are the old 60 series, 70 series and 80 series Toyotas. There are spare parts up here, people know how to fix them, and they survive the rough roads as well as anything else will. This campaign is for that car. It is a homeland vehicle, not a private one. Gaypalani, the djungaya here, will do what he can to see it is looked after and maintained for as long as possible. A small donation helps buy it, freight it in, and leave a little aside for the first repairs. Donations will be acknowledged on this page. A receipt will also be issued for that campaign.
