The festival, which is free and open to the public, begins at 10am and continues to 8pm at Talinguru Nyakuntjaku, the park's new viewing area. It's the first cultural festival in the park and will celebrate the Anangu culture and the achievements of the past 25 years while highlighting the growing strength of indigenous tourism.

In 1985, Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park became one of the first parks in the world to be managed by a board with a majority of traditional owners, a model that has since been adopted and adapted in many other parts of Australia and the world. For the past 25 years, joint management of the park has been guided by tjukurpa - traditional Anangu law and knowledge.

Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park has the rare honour of being listed twice as a World Heritage area - for its environment in 1987 and for the global significance of the Anangu living culture in 1994. Every year the site receives more than 300,000 visitors, many linking with Anunga Tours, a multi-award-winning company owned and staffed by the indigenous people.

Activities at the festival include traditional dancing, a photographic exhibition, 25 years and still going strong, at the cultural centre, a children's area, a spear-throwing competition and appearances by local artists.

Five local indigenous bands will perform, and Shane Howard will sing Solid Rock, his 1982 ode to Uluru.

A free shuttle will run to Talinguru Nyakuntjaku from Ayers Rock Resort on the day.
