Nationwide there is no other "modelling competition" that contributes to the well being and expression of identity for a cultural group as does Kimberley Girl. Focusing on the Indigenous background apparent in many people within the region, each year we aim to find a young lady between the ages of 16 and 25 who can proudly show her heritage and be a valuable role model and spokesperson for young Indigenous women of the Kimberley.

The stylish, contemporary event is held at the Goolarri Outdoor Venue in Broome with additional heats being held throughout the Kimberley region.

Broome dates for 2007:

Heat 1 - Friday October 5

Heat 2 - Friday October 12

Kimberley Girl Final - Friday October 19

The Winners - Kimberley Girl 2006

On Friday October 20th, Mystique Dia from Broome was given the title of Kimberley Girl 2006 in front of over 500 people at the Goolarri Outdoor Venue.

Mystique's heritage is ingrained in the Kimberley region. Her Grandmother was a Nyul Nyul woman and was born on a mission in Beagle Bay and her Grandfather migrated from Koepang to pursue a career in the Broome pearling industry. Mystique is very proud of her background and says "I am very proud of my cultural identity as it reminds me of my unique qualities and those of the Kimberley region as a whole."

This talented and beautiful 18 year old is currently studying psychology and education at university in Perth and in the future would like to work within the community helping youth reach their goals. Mystique would like to promote to young women that there is no shame in being proud, independent and strong whilst pursuing their dreams. Mystique is excited about being a community role model and spokesperson for Kimberley Girl over the next 12 months.

Kimberley Girl 2006 First Runner-Up was Anne Bennett from the Aboriginal Community of Bidyadanga. Anne is 20 years old and is looking towards a future in hospitality as a chef. Anne recently finished 2 years of hospitality studies in Perth whilst working at a restaurant to put herself through school. Over the next 12 months Anne would like to encourage more Aboriginal girls to get involved in different positive experiences that will assist them in fulfilling their future goals and aspirations.

The 2nd Runner Up of Kimberley Girl 2006 was 17 year old Talissa Kinley from Broome. Talissa is still in High School and wants to be a youth worker so she can change the way youth in and around the Kimberley region think and act. Talissa, who won "Most Photogenic" in Kimberley Girl 2005 has been busy over the last 12 months doing photo shoots for local fashion houses and is excited about the input she can make in the lives of Indigenous youth over the coming year.

Anne-Janette Phillips won the Judges Choice Award whilst Tama Lawson took out "Most Photogenic".

Congratulations to all the young women who entered Kimberley Girl 2006 who can stand tall and proud knowing they have made a difference.

Thankyou also to all the supporters and attendees of Kimberley Girl for helping us to celebrate the strength of women.
