At this special briefing, we will have the unique opportunity to hear from three globally recognized Indigenous leaders who were intimately involved in the 22-year long international campaign at the United Nations for the adoption of a Declaration of Rights for Indigenous Peoples.
They will discuss technical aspects of the UN Declaration on the Rights on Indigenous Peoples, its strengths and its weaknesses; how declarations and other international instruments take on the force of law, utilizing concrete examples, and opportunities presented by the recently approved Declaration for strengthening human rights, land rights and resource rights for Indigenous Peoples around the world.
There will also be time to examine the role of philanthropy in supporting efforts to utilize the Declaration to advance human rights of Indigenous Peoples at both the domestic level and international bodies and international cases.
We also will hear from Jerry Mander, co-author, with Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, of Paradigm Wars: Indigenous Peoples Resistance to Economic Globalization (Sierra Club/University of California Press, 2006) and longtime advocate for Indigenous Peoples rights.
We apologize for the short notice on this gathering, but we wanted to take advantage of the presence of these Indigenous leaders in Washington, D.C. for the IFG-Tebtebba strategy session on "Actualizing the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples" that is currently taking place on October 27th and 28th at the Institute for Policy Studies.
