Road to Dampier Peninsula and Bandinarr Bush Camp
Julbunj Ngarrmun Camping Area

Project Name/Title: Julbunj Ngarrmun Tourism Program
Estimated Start Date: July 2004
Estimated Completion Date: Oct 2004
Total Budget: $21297 (exclusive of GST)
ISX Funds Requested: $10,776.70

The Julbunj/Ngarramun Aboriginal Corporation is situated 166km north of Broome on the Dampier Peninsula in the area know as Rumble Bay.

The Julbunj/Ngarrmun Tourism Program is designed around the community's CDEP strategy and is focused on the development of an economic tourism activity to improve the self sufficiency of participants. The community is establishing the Bandinarr Bush Camp offering campsites, bush tours, exploration of traditional culture and a variety of nature based experiences. The community has developed its own business plan that incorporates tourism and aquaculture.

Community members have undertaken nationally accredited tourism training. Currently they have links with Notre Dame University from the USA where they provide cultural interpretation to specialized groups several times per season. They have also been approached to use Bandinarr Bush Camp as a base for a nationally recognized tour company. Tours will focus on lifestyle and culture sharing activities.

The community is seeking funds to install a toilet system, signage and rubbish bins as outlined in the attached budget.

In order to maximise the monies, the community is seeking assistance with funding for material costs. If this submission is successful community members will construct the infrastructure as outlined as part of their ongoing CDEP activity. This process will not only develop the community's physical infrastructure but establish a sense of pride and ownership in the ongoing development of the business venture.

The members of the Aboriginal Corporation have a vision for self sustainability for themselves and their children. There are no other sources of funding that that fit the criteria for their vision of the future. Provision of this funding will provide the kick start needed to leverage the community into a successful independent tourism venture.
