ARC AUSTRALIAN POSTGRADUATE AWARD (INDUSTRY)

Philanthropy and Indigenous People: Enhancing Indigenous Education
Outcomes

The Centre for Aboriginal Economic Policy Research (CAEPR) located at
the Australian National University invites applications for an
Australian Postgraduate Award (Industry) scholarship leading to the
degree of doctor of Philosophy. The scholarship is funded via the
Australian Research Council and will be available in early 2010.

Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, the student will
participate in research that aims to critically assess the degree to
which philanthropic interventions improve Indigenous education
outcomes-from both Indigenous and philanthropic perspectives-with the
goal of identifying or developing models, strategies and principles of
effective partnership and engagement. The student will work directly
with project Chief Investigators Dr Jerry Schwab and Dr Janet Hunt. In
addition, the student will receive support from staff of the project
Partner Organisation, the Melbourne Community Foundation and members of
the project Advisory Committee, who will provide advice, assist with
analysing findings and facilitate access to other philanthropic groups
in Melbourne and across the nation.

The project aims to inform the development of new practical and
theoretical approaches to building partnerships and enhancing Indigenous
education outcomes. The project initially will focus on Melbourne and
extend as appropriate to other parts of Victoria and nationally during
the period 2010-13. The scholar will be required to have a background in
anthropology, education or a similar social science discipline.

A demonstrated knowledge of and interest in Indigenous Australian
communities and people is required.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are encouraged to apply.

The scholarship includes a stipend of $26,669 per annum (tax free) for
three years and funding for fieldwork, relocation and thesis production.

Eligibility: Applicants must be Australian Citizens or permanent
residents of Australia who meet admission requirements for a research
program at The Australian National University.

Potential applicants are requested to contact Dr Jerry Schwab, CAEPR,
Tel (02) 61258208, Email: Jerry.Schwab@anu.edu.au or Dr Janet Hunt,
CAEPR, Tel (02) 61258209, Email: Janet.Hunt@anu.edu.au by 11 December
