Practical Outcomes of the ISX07 May 200430 enterprises and organisations made presentations at the Ngunnawal Trading Floor; 36 enterprises and organisations made presentations on the Kuku Yalanji trading floor; below are a selection of enterprises that presented. These represent the range of projects in terms of sophistication and size. Please see web references for more detailed proposals. Philanthropic, venture capital initiatives and partnership groups have not been included below. The ISX website will update practical outcomes and will be an ongoing resource for projects, enterprises and organisations seeking support.

KJ = Kuku Yalanji Trading Floor

Funding will be contributed jointly by Wildman and the ILC,with the land being contributed by the Woibo clan. The project will generate in excess of $1.2m pa in project revenues and offer employment of up to five full time employees.The project is a commercial scale pilot cashew plantation with a view to establishing further cashew plantations on the Cape.The intent of the JV partners is for the Woibo Clan to buy out the original JV Partners over time,once cash flows and sufficient operational expertise has been demonstrated. 5 Critical Points * Identify suitable land and water allocation for irrigation * Raise funding of $1.5m for project to sustainable earnings * Ensure legal and community issues are fully addressed regarding appropriate land use and tenure prior to commencement. *Provide high-level project management to ensure local clan members are fully trained in best practice horticulture. * Woibo Clan to buy back full ownership of the cashew plantation over a ten-year period. Trading floor to be offered through ODN hosted at Goolarri Studios Broome KJ - Indigenous Tourism The idea of a "top end indigenous tourist network" was floated linking the Kimberley, NT and Cape York to be explored, Contact: ISX Idea to be discussed between Cape York Tourist Enterprises and Kimberley Tourist Enterprises at Broome on May 19; N - Balkanu has several projects in tourism that require investments and other forms of support. Small capital funds to provide infrastructure are a key requirement for many of these projects. Architects for small structures and tourist pathways are also needed. Individual project proposals and plans are available and have been presented at the Nganawal trading floor and will be presented at the Kuku Yalanji trading floor. All Balkanu projects are developed through business hubs. Business Hubs are support offices, designed to provide a wide range of support and referral services to people aspiring to start a new business, or to improve an existing business. Hubs are expected to be geographically located in the following areas. Cooktown Hub - Cooktown, Hope Vale, Wujal Wujal, Mossman and Laura (this hub started in May 2001), Weipa Hub - supporting Wiepa, Aurukun, Mapoon and Napranum, Central Hub - supporting Coen and Lockhart River, NPA Hub - supporting Injinoo, New Mapoon and Umagico (still to be negotiated), Southern Hub - supporting Kowanyama and Pormpuraaw (still to be negotiated). The types of support services provided by Business Hubs include the following: Encouragement of Entrepreneurship, Testing ideas and business models, Provision of support and advice on finance and funding applications, Provision of general support services, including bookkeeping, training, and legal advice, Mentoring To date the Cooktown Hub has seen approximately twelve clients. Three of these have progressed towards the development of a concrete business plan or model. Two clients are now negotiating bookkeeping services from the Hub. Several clients have submitted application forms. Two have now received ABN numbers from the tax office. Local indigenous youths are referred to the program by the local community Justice Committee, the Courts or their families, usually after being caught in offending or self destructive behaviours. Youths will also attend voluntarily as they hear of the benefits of participating in the program. Each community program would typically include 12-15 youths male and female and usually each person would attend the program for 6-12 months. There is an option that if the young person wishes they may remain in the program and work towards a supervisory position. The program is developed around a viable commercial enterprise which can range from the harvesting, distillation and sale of eucalyptus and melaleuca oils, fishing or harvesting marine resources or the catching and sale of mud crabs. Boys from the Bush needs to develop a national market for its products. It seeks marketing expertise and mentoring, development capital and retailers willing to sell Boys from the Bush products.
