A Message from Carol Martin, MLA to prospective purchasers of Indigenous ArtThank you for coming to my on-line exhibition and for considering the purchase of one of my paintings. It is always very difficult for someone to show their own works and it took a great deal of courage for me to mount my first public exhibition last December. Our purpose in putting this online exhibition together is to highlight a new ethical awareness amongst investors in Indigenous art. Already there are many tremendous things happening all over the country through galleries and auctions. With this exhibition we are creating another option for Indigenous art investors to put something back into Indigenous arts and culture and community development. Rather than wait for a law to compel buyers of Indigenous art to repay royalties to communities we are asking you and other purchasers of Indigenous art right now to consider investing or supporting Indigenous communities through donations or gifts or by creating your own ideas for supporting Indigenous communities. My suggestion is to make a minimum donation or support payment back to an Indigenous community equivalent to 20 per cent of the purchase price of any Indigenous artwork you purchase. You can do this in any number of ways and my suggestion is that you create a provenance document and attach it to the back of the painting, sign it, and make a list of the donations or investments made in the name of that artwork. If you sell the artwork explain this idea to the purchaser and ask them to make a similar commitment. If you purchase the painting above the ISX has created two options to help you make a commitment back. You can make a a donation of $300 to the Indigenous Art and Culture Development fund held by the Broome Aboriginal Media Association and administered in consultation with me (non tax deductible gift) or alternately you can make tax deductible gift to the Broome Aboriginal Media Association. If you want to take up one of these two options just click on the links below, alternately create your own provenance document and take up the challenge of supporting Indigenous communities with your own ideas which may even be non-monetary. Thanks once again for your support and for so generously considering my painting and "my soul, my heart, my home"! Carol Martin I will make an online gift of $300 to the Broome Aboriginal Media Association (tax deductible gift)
