Jack Thompson is an Australian legend. His work amongst the Yolngu people of North East Arnhem Land is also legendary. Take a look at this short movie that profiles his latest project supporting homeland housing. To support this work double click this link

Warawarni-gu

The Warawarni-gu (Ngarluma language meaning 'to heal') Art Centre opened in 2003 as a community based, Not For Profit, Incorporated Association committed to assisting the Indigenous people of the Roebourne Area with enhancing and maintaining quality of life and mental health through art, training, employment, health and personal development. The Centre strongly promotes and supports self determination of the centre participants.

The Centre provides creative educational experiences using visual art as a tool to enable participants to explore creative processes, personal expression and to incorporate culture and art. The focus is on connecting with the 'creative process', which can be a pretty bumpy and uncertain road of experimentation and discovery encouraging personal development, particularly self confidence, self esteem and self awareness which can enhance the ability to function in other aspects of life.

Warawarni-gu is a Community Development Employment Programme activity centre and a founding member of the Roebourne Art Group Collective.

We are currently running TAFE training in visual arts and basic customer service. We are also running a small grant through DADAA (Disability and Disadvantage in the Arts Australia) and working towards connecting with Healthway with more of a focus on the area of promoting health and working more with the Elderly and people with disabilities.

We are looking for support from people who can see the value in the 'process'. Commercial outcomes are not our focus and this makes our process a little difficult as this is not an easy thing to have to try and justify on paper.
