Coordinator Raelene Saylor talks about the unique philosophy of the Roebourne Art Group.
Roebourne Art Group (RAG) was established to support Aboriginal & TSI people who wished to advance their skills in the area of arts & crafts. It is now pursuing skills and activities in the Textile, Jewellery, Glass Art & Ochre Painting arena. In the future it will also work closely with TAFE Roebourne in order to develop skills and knowledge around textiles.
Over the next three years RAG plans to
- Establish an administration centre
- Provide space for arts / crafts people to work
- Increase the number of Art Gallery exhibitions for local arts/crafts
- Establish and broaden networking with local and Perth based Government & non- Government agencies involved in the arts / crafts arena
- Establish contacts with like organisations in other States in Australia
- Seek to provide necessary contacts / assistance for those Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people who express an interest in the performing arts
Roebourne Art Group ( RAG ) is essentially a Resource Centre for the four main Aboriginal Art / Craft Groups located in the Shire of Roebourne, primarily located at Cossack, Roebourne & Wickham.
These include:
1. Muralagauh Buai Torres Strait Islander Corporation [ Polowia Cedar ], 2. Warawarni-gu ( Healing Art Centre ) Art Centre [ Sheree Martin ]3. Warba Mirdawaji Art Group [ Jill Churnside ] 4. Bhujee-Nhoor-Pu Art Group [ Cossack ] [ Adam Lockhart ]
Each of these groups have their own coordinators and governing committee and as such operate quite independently and autonomously from the Roebourne Art Group.
Each group have their own groups of artists and crafts-people, the majority of them being CDEP participants, thereby having close contact with Ngarliyarndu Bindirri ( CDEP ) Aboriginal Corporation located in Roebourne.
RAG operates in a community development mode, and ensures that community based governance is essential as is a demonstrated commitment toward empowerment and facilitating cultural and economic development through a successful social enterprise.
RAG seeks to actively promote arts & crafts for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people within the towns of Roebourne, Karratha, Wickham, Out-Stations & Remote Communities.
The towns of Onslow, Tom Price, Marble Bar & Nullagine will also be included under the Roebourne Art Group Out-Reach program.
Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander groups/organisations acknowledge that there are problems with their youth today, and are attempting to harness their energies into social and cultural activities which allows for their Lore & Culture to continue in this area.
Many young people are interested in undertaking training in art, and also the performing arts. Roebourne Art Group will seek to encourage their participation in these areas.
It is anticipated at this time that many of the projected programs for the forthcoming financial year will address the needs and aspirations of not only the young people, but adults as well. Whilst this interest is maintained and continued we can feel reasonably comfortable that not only are the younger peoples needs being addressed, but those of the adults as well.
