My background

Damien Djerrkura is an Aboriginal man who was born and continues to live in Gove (Nhulunbuy). He has a strong traditional background derived from earlier residence at Yirrkala (an indigenous community some 20km from Nhulunbuy). He is a member of the 'Wangurri' clan.

Damien Djerrkura's father was a well respected figure and a strong advocate for community development, working inclusively with both Aboriginal and non-aboriginal people to achieve positive outcomes for his people, and was a great role model and mentor for and to Damien.

Mr Djerrkura completed school in Gove to year 8 before moving to Darwin to further his secondary education. He subsequently moved to Brisbane where he completed year 12 at Kooralbyn International School.

During his years in Nhulunbuy he has observed significant changes within the Yolngu community, particularly in regard to community issues, both socially and employment/ training concerns impacting on younger generations.

As a Training Supervisor with ALERT and YNOTS (Mr Djerrkura's previous employer under Alcan's Indigenous program) he readily recognised the need for Aboriginal people to take on responsibility and ownership of training and education for his people in order to gain employment in the mainstream environment.

He is committed to assisting and supporting the development of Aboriginal training and employment with realistic outcomes based on strategic planning and meeting individuals' targets/goals.

He believes there needs to be a strong focus on young Yolngu people becoming more active and confident in the community and showing initiative to set up the foundations for their children's future in a real and positive way.
