My background

Juanita (Jo) Howard

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as the Principal of Coaching, Mentoring and Training Services (CMT Services) and a long term resident of Nhulunbuy, NT.

Throughout my years in Nhulunbuy, I have been actively employed within numerous organizations, working with and alongside local indigenous people.

This association has given me a first-hand understanding of
• indigenous issues,
• Indigenous culture
• And the need for a tailor made and specialized Training program

It has also helped in fostering many relationships with aboriginal people, resulting in enduring friendships and trust.

My relevant and sound experience is supported by my formal qualifications in Mentoring, Training and Assessment.

In recent times, through my involvement in the Commonwealth Job Network scheme, and working successfully with local indigenous people, I have formalized a model that I believe can overcome two of the most significant issues currently affecting the greater Gove Peninsular community:
• Indigenous unemployment and retention of staff
• Literacy and Numeracy
• Skill shortages

Discussions, encouragement and initial commitment from a cross section of local stakeholders concerning these issues have been the catalyst in formalizing the following program ""Cultural Connections"".

A program I believe is vital to success in the employment of indigenous people, not only in Arnhem Land, but throughout Australia.

The "Cultural Connections" program is not a quick fix in regard to the past employment misunderstandings of both cultures.

It is a long term "mentoring and training" program that is designed to provide the employer and potential Indigenous employees with an in-depth understanding of each others cultural habits.

When this is achieved, there will be for the first time, a structured pathway of understanding between both parties that will result in long-term employment relationships.
