Fire and the Story

Closing date:

Region: Australia - National

What we need

We are seeking help to launch "Fire and the Story" in Melbourne, Sydney and Cairns. First and foremost we are looking for a good indoor venue to hold the event. Other things to get help with if possible is,

Advertising the event.
Guest List,
Equipment - Sound, screen, mics and amps.

We are aiming to hold the event in the last week or two of November, I am trying to get venues sorted out then all should run smooth after that. Please help us where possible to pull this off for indigenous Australia, we need to show that traditional practices have a role to the future environmental and community issues.

The Event

This event is to support the documentary "Fire and the Story" developed by Cape York Elders regarding traditional fire management and the problems with its absence in the environment and urban areas today in Australia. The film is a product of the grass roots Traditional Knowledge Revival Pathways project and is a bid to educate the broader public nationally and inter-nationally, the benefits of reapplying TK burning techniques.

The film is not just a stand-alone feature. The range of chapters and stories that make up the film are real, with Elders on country assessing the issue first hand. The areas involved are also practically re-engaging fire back into country that has created employment for young indigenous people to recover and re-apply the role. The message in general is to convince Government agencies that Traditional Knowledge should play a leading role to the management of the Australian Environment and to assist indigenous lead studies of fire for global warming solutions.

One of the chapters has been shot with Native American people in California as well, to show and support the similarities of TK systems of indigenous people from other countries, and how they are based on the same principals of making country healthy and rich. The film also demonstrates Elders travelling to areas of Australia to teach other groups how to read the country and restructure the traditional regime - Bridging Principals. Other clans and areas involved are Kuranda, Laura, Aurukun, Lakefield, Cape Tribulation, Gulf, Research outcomes and Pastoral properties.

This application is to support a simple launch of the film in Sydney, Melbourne and Cairns in a way that will attract a good number of audiences and investors that will create further assistance and partnership support towards the recording and re-implementation of Traditional Knowledge for community and environmental well being. Indigenous artists and bands are supporting the film with soundtrack songs and will endeavour to include solo artists to perform at the launch, the artists are recording Albums and will also be a way to expose their talents in the big smoke as well. This will also be a good time to launch the Mulong Pty Ltd, a indigenous recording label that is forming the economical arm for the TKRP project. The event will also have speakers in regard to fire management in Australia and the Mulong\TKRP initiatives.

The project is extremely important and the revival of the knowledge into current mainstream management will help into launching this film, it will assist to provide on ground results. No support yet for the launch has been granted and on behalf of country and Elders, we would really value the support of Donkey Wheel throughout the entire event and hopes to maintain connection with many more future initiatives.
