The following Item appeared on the ABC Newsonline web site: Last Update: Tuesday, March 28, 2006. 12:49pm (AEDT) PUSH ON FOR MORE INDIGENOUS PRISON OFFICERS The Government is launching a recruitment drive to try to redress an imbalance in the Kimberley's prison system in north-west Western Australia. The Department of Corrective Services wants to boost the number of Indigenous prison officers. More than 70 of the 116 inmates currently in Broome Regional Prison are Indigenous, but there are only five Aboriginal officers. The department's Hector O'Loughlin says a "pre-employment program" is planned for Broome to help Indigenous candidates meet the criteria to be a prison officer. "I think traditionally it's not an area that Aboriginal people look at ... it's an area which they steer away from, but we're trying to get Aboriginal people involved," he said. "Currently we have about five Aboriginal staff, but we would like there to be more and basically to get the word out amongst their people to say that it is a career.
