Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders who want to become police officers are being encouraged to apply for traineeships with the Queensland Police Service.

Successful applicants will undergo six months of training at the Queensland Police Academy in Brisbane.

Merrilyn Clifford, from police recruiting, says the 14 traineeships are fully paid.

"We're hoping to attract people from Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander background who can join the police service hopefully eventually as a police officer," she said.

"We will give them the educational component which makes them eligible to train as a recruit in order to become a police officer."
