Good Morning Cape York

Local radio for Cape York Communities

Goooooood Morning, Cape York.

Thanks to a $49,500 Smart State grant, local radio broadcasting will soon hit the airwaves regularly throughout Cape York communities.

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Trade, and Innovation Anna Bligh today announced the Indigenous Business Establishment Program grant will help 11 local radio stations go 'live', creating five full-time positions and four part-time positions over three years.

"Cape York communities will now be able to rely on regular local broadcasts of local news and information using local voices," Ms Bligh said.

She said Triple A Training, a division of Brisbane Indigenous Media Association Inc and licensee of Brisbane's respected Indigenous radio station 4 Triple A Murri Country, would use the grant to buy the equipment needed to better serve remote broadcast training programs for members of the Cape York communities.

The purchase of video-conferencing equipment, including computers, servers and headphones will allow some of the training to be conducted via the web while other training will be conducted by trained media professionals working in the communities.

The development of the training programs will also provide opportunities for Triple A Training to tender for contract work from the government and private sectors throughout remote Queensland, with potential for national and even international students to participate.

Member for Cook Jason O'Brien welcomed the grant acknowledging the vital link local indigenous radio stations play in remote communities in Cape York.

"I'm looking forward to hearing the results of the training over the airwaves of Far North Queensland," said Mr O'Brien.

Triple A Training manager Mike Scott said 15 communities would now get the trained staff they needed to provide regular radio broadcasts.

"This is terrific news for these communities," he said.

"Without this equipment, future programs would be difficult and costly, given the issues associated with travel to such remote places. Now much of our delivery will utilise audio, video and the web."
